Jaguar and Land Rover mild hybrids could appear in UK dealerships by 2010, Autocar reports. Engineers are working with a 3.0-liter V-6 diesel as a base for the green machines, utilizing stop-start technology for use in the Land Rover LR3, Range Rover Sport, Jaguar XF, and Jaguar XJ. The vehicles are reported to realize a fuel economy improvement of up to 10 percent versus the standard gasoline-only powered models. The direct-injection 5.0-liter V-8 is also expected to be used as a base for mild-hybrid powertrains.Helping to make this possible is ZF's new eight-speed gearbox, which has a separate hydraulic reservoir that makes the transmission compatible with stop-start tech. Also on the table for 2010 is a mild-hybrid Land Rover engineered with a super capacitor for short-term electricity storage as well as a starter-generator that could recharge the battery during engine braking. For the 2012 or 2013 XJ sedan, Jaguar is supposedly interested in the ZF Dynastart electric motor in the upcoming Mercedes-Benz S-Class hybrid. The motor replaces the torque convertor, and can be used in a mild or full hybrid powertrain -- the latter being the likely setup in the XJ early next decade.Jaguar/Land Rover's long term green solutions will be developed with help from the British government under the Low Carbon Vehicle program. The resulting technologies, Autocar says, will include a plug-in hybrid, a flywheel-based energy recovery system, and a 120g/km full-hybrid Jaguar.
